Coaching Tips:
WINNING THE SCRIMMAGE SHOULD NOT BE THE GOAL
As a youth coach, your first scrimmage should focus on base execution, baseline evaluations, and game-speed conditioning, using simple plays and base formations. The second scrimmage should focus on situational football, scripted drives, and creative packages to prep your team for the season opener.
INFC Scrimmage 1: Base Execution & Evaluation
The goal for the first scrimmage is to assess how well your players handle live-contact against an unfamiliar team, and to clean up your most foundational concepts.
- Players: Rotate heavily. Give every player game repetitions so you can solidify your starters and discover where backup players fit best. Prioritize minimum play requirements.
- Plays & Schemes: Limit your playbook to 1-2 base running plays (e.g., Inside Zone, Power, Sweep) and for older grades 1-2 basic passing concepts (e.g., Slant, Flat). Teams should master these concepts before adding complexity. Defensively, stick to a base alignment (e.g., 4-4 or 5-3) in older & advanced grades.
- Formations: Use symmetrical base sets (like Pro or Normal I). Do not shift or motion too much; you want players focusing on blocking, tackling, and gap discipline rather than trying to figure out where to line up.
Focus Areas:
- Sideline Operations: Practice calling plays, communicating signals or wristbands, and getting substitutions onto the field without delay of game penalties.
- Tempo: Ensure your players are bursting off the ball at the snap.
- Fundamentals: Emphasize wrapping up, shedding blocks, and maintaining outside leverage on defense.
INFC Scrimmage 2: Situational Football & Adjustments
The goal for the second scrimmage is to prepare your team for real-game adversity, pacing, and specific field zones.
- Players: Lock in your starting units, but also give your second-string players situational reps so they are ready when called upon during the year.
- Plays & Schemes: Open up the playbook to your full pre-season installation. Implement one or two specialized packages, such as a short-yardage or goal-line package.
- Formations: Introduce your exotic formations. Practice unbalanced lines, trips, jet sweeps with pre-snap motion, and shifting from one formation to another to confuse the opposing defense.
Focus Areas:
- Scripted Drives: Use the scrimmage for scripted scenarios (e.g., starting at your own 20-yard line, or having the offense start 3rd-and-long) to practice play-calling in context.
- Red Zone & Goal Line: Practice scoring inside the 10-yard line and executing goal-line stands.
- Special Teams: Dedicate reps specifically to special teams. Work on extra points & punting as they are heavily utilized within the older grades.
- Two-Minute Drill: Put your offense and defense in a late-game, clock-management situation to test their composure.
To ensure your players develop safely and effectively during these tune-ups, consult your high school coaches, educational materials and use USA Football Practice Guidelines for recommendations on contact limits and acclimatization.
